Spawning run salmon 2004

Salmon were sampled during the spawning run from the Baltic Proper to the Bothnian Bay and finally ascendants of the River Simojoki (sampled at the stripping off eggs) in 2004.

The aim was to study the changes in thiamine and its components, as well as other lipid-related biochemical indices of salmon, during the spawning run from the southern Baltic Sea to the spawning rivers of the Bothnian Bay. Salmon were sampled in four sea locations during May–June, and finally during the spawning time in October in salmon that had returned to the River Simojoki. Changes in salmon lipid content and FA composition were related with other measured biochemical indices to verify the connection between dietary lipids and PUFAs, and thiamine deficiency M74 in salmon. The total length and mass of 4–10 salmon specimens were measured and liver, ovaries (or eggs) and muscle sampled. All the sampled tissues were analyzed for the concentrations of thiamine components. Total lipids, fatty acids and total carotenoids were analyzed in muscle. Hepatic activities of G6PDH and EROD were determined. Lipid peroxidation potential was determined in liver as MDA. The organohalogen concentrations of salmon was known. The file contains original raw data.
